Ann Arbor Citizens’ Climate Lobby collaborated with 2 other climate-focused organizations — Washtenaw Climate Reality and Sierra Club Huron Valley Group — to create a questionnaire for Ann Arbor City Council and Mayoral candidates on local climate policy. We are grateful that all candidates who are participating in the August primary took the time to provide thoughtful answers!

Questions
Q1 – A2Zero Sustainability Energy Utility: The Ann Arbor Sustainable Energy Utility (SEU) is an opt-in public utility that supplements DTE by installing new 100% renewable energy generation and storage equipment throughout Ann Arbor. Do you support the SEU ’s continued operation, and why or why not?
Q2 – Ann Arbor Public Power: Ann Arbor for Public Power (A2P2) proposes that Ann Arbor acquire and operate DTE’s equipment and ultimately move towards running on 100% renewable electricity. Do you support the A2P2 proposal, and why or why not?
Q3 – Comprehensive Land Use Plan: Given the importance of creating walkable, affordable, and energy efficient neighborhoods to meet our climate goals, what are your ideas on implementing the recently passed Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP)? Do you support a wider variety of housing types in all neighborhoods currently zoned single family residential? For example, the new comprehensive land use plan calls for allowing triplexes in every neighborhood. Do you support these changes, and why or why not?
Q4 – Transportation Emissions: The A2ZERO plan calls for reducing transportation emissions by cutting vehicle miles traveled by 50%. What would you do as a Council Member to help achieve this?
Q5 – Accelerating Decarbonization: It appears that Ann Arbor is not on track to hit its 2030 carbon neutrality goal. What specific policies would you promote on Council to accelerate community-wide decarbonization?
Q6 – Additional Comments: Is there anything else you would like voters to know regarding your views on local climate policy?
